Hello!

My name is L. Esther Hibbs and I am excited to introduce myself as the new Managing Editor of Emergency Physicians International. I have witnessed the importance of strong medical systems and healthcare advocacy throughout my life, and am passionate about supporting them. It is an honor to transform my passions into a profession alongside Logan Plaster, through this journal.

As a child, I accompanied my physician parents in Latin America, where they encouraged sustainable change by training rural health promoters in preventative medicine and healthcare advocacy techniques. The project taught me about more than just healthcare. I also learned about the importance of building rapport and sharing stories to create safe spaces within communities. The experience inspired me to complete a degree in Sociology from Skidmore College in upstate New York, and pursue professional opportunities to enact social change through community development.

In Summer 2019, I was offered the incredible opportunity to work as the administrative intern at PACE MD, alongside director Dr. Haywood Hall in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico. In addition to learning about the world of emergency medicine, I was also able to experience the PACE Forum, which I helped to facilitate. I also had the privilege of meeting Logan Plaster, who recently invited me onboard to help connect the emergency medicine community through EPI. Now, I am excited to use my experiences in community development and project management as I grow in the context of medical journalism.

From making friends during my parents’ time in Honduras as a child to internships and professional explorations throughout college, I have experienced that community development begins in part with storytelling. Nothing connects people quite like sharing experiences that resonate with and challenge our peers, mentors, and friends. I am thrilled to help facilitate the documentation of this community’s experiences. I look forward to hearing your stories. Thank you for taking the time to hear mine.

Sincerely,
L. Esther Hibbs
